The route and how the day usually goes
From Chandigarh the road runs through Ropar and Bilaspur, along the Sutlej, then up through Sundernagar and Mandi. After Mandi you enter the Pandoh stretch and the Aut tunnel, then follow the Beas up through Kullu and into Manali.
Most people leave Chandigarh early — around 5 or 6 am — to reach Manali by mid afternoon. Breakfast is usually around Bilaspur or Sundernagar, with a lunch stop near Mandi or Kullu.
Road conditions worth knowing about
The Mandi to Manali section has had ongoing four-laning and tunnel work for years, and landslide closures during monsoon are a genuine possibility. During July to September we keep an eye on conditions and will tell you if the road is being held up.
In winter, Manali itself is reachable in normal conditions, but Rohtang and Atal Tunnel access depends entirely on snow and permits. We can advise, but the tunnel status is not something anyone can guarantee in advance.
Vehicle recommendation for this run
For a seven to eight hour hill journey we strongly suggest the Innova Crysta or at minimum an Ertiga. The extra space and suspension make a real difference by hour five, especially on the Pandoh and Kullu stretches.
A sedan will do the trip and is fine for two people travelling light, but most families regret it on this particular route.
