The route we take
Out of Chandigarh through Panchkula and Pinjore, then up past Kalka where the climb properly starts, through Dharampur and Solan, and into Shimla via Shoghi. It is the NH5 the whole way, which is the fastest and best-maintained option.
Most people stop once around Dharampur or Barog for tea and a break. If you want a proper lunch stop, Solan has better options and adds maybe forty minutes to the trip.
When to leave
Leaving Chandigarh by 7 or 8 in the morning gets you into Shimla comfortably before the afternoon. Weekend afternoons are the worst for the Solan to Shoghi stretch, and during peak tourist season the last few kilometres into Shimla can crawl.
In winter the road is usually fine, but snow above Shoghi can slow things down. We will tell you honestly if conditions look bad rather than putting you on the road regardless.
Which vehicle suits this route
A sedan is fine for two or three people with light bags. For a family, or anyone who gets carsick on the switchbacks, the Ertiga or Innova Crysta is a noticeably better ride on the climbs.
Note that vehicles cannot drive right into the Mall Road area in Shimla — traffic is restricted there. We drop at the closest permitted point to your hotel, usually near the lift or Cart Road.
